Notes

During the Depression: John lost his inheritance (reasons uncertain - possibly bank/bureaucracy/regulatory reasons). Consequentially, John didn't believe in banks, and he was distrustful of the government. He had a large (several feet across/standing height) safe in the basement of his home. The safe was lined with concrete. When the great depression hit, John's money was safe. Bank collapses didn't affect his savings. Family, freinds and neighbors stored money in his safe.
