My Rating:
My Review: The first 007 movie after Roger Moore's retirement. Starring Timothy Dalton, this movie marked a resurgence of the James Bond franchise. The story - James Bond is dispatched to protect a defecting Russian General. When he 'fails' to eliminate the beautiful assassin, Bond is sucked into a complicated double crossing weapons heist involving freelance Russian and American villains. Maryam d'Abo does a fine job playing the Czech cellist turned reluctant assassin - The Bond girl in this movie. The movie featured lighter moments, British humor; but bond stayed relatively stoic, as funny as Timothy Dalton can be (not very). The movie contained all the gadgets, girls and gabby bad guys you expect in a Bond movie. The involvement of US/Soviet/Afghan conflict dates the movie and does very little for the plot. The pacing was a bit too fast, with the convoluted pace, but the action scenes fit smartly with the overall pacing. I enjoyed the movie, but it clearly wasn't on par with others in the genre. 3 out of 5.

Summary: It's 2274, and on the surface, it all seems to be an idyllic society. Living in a city within an enclosed dome, there is little or no work for humans to perform, and inhabitants are free to pursue all of the pleasures of life. There is one catch however: your life is limited and when you reach thirty, it is terminated in a quasi-religious ceremony known as "carrousel". Some, known as "runners", try to escape their fate when the time comes, and it's the job of Sandmen to track them down and kill them. Logan (Michael York) is such a man, and with several years before his own termination date, thinks nothing of the job he does. Soon after meeting a young woman, Jessica-6 (Jenny Agutter), he is ordered to become a runner and infiltrate a community outside the dome known as "Sanctuary" and to destroy it. Pursued by his friend Francis (Richard Jordan), also a Sandman, Logan and Jessica find their way to the outside. There, they discover a beautiful, virtually uninhabited world. Logan ...

My Review: Great, classic sci-fi with crappy visual effects.

Genre: Horror
Studio: Seraphim Films   Release date: 1995   Rated: R

Summary: During a routine case in L.A., NY private investigator Harry D'Amour stumbles over members of a fanatic cult, who are waiting for the resurrection of their leader Nix. 13 years ago, Nix was gunned down by his best trainee Swann. In the meantime Swann is advanced to a popular illusionist like David Copperfield and is married to the charming Dorothea. She hires D'Amour to protect Swann against the evil cult members. A short time later Swann is killed by one of his own tricks and the occurrences are turning over, and it crackles between Dorothea and D'Amour.
My Rating:
My Review: Great acting, spectacular special effects, written and directed by the horror master Clive Barker, who could ask for more? This movie blends horror, the supernatural and visual effects in one of the best Clive Barker films I've seen. The acting was outstanding. Even the performance by Scott Bakula was above average. The performance by Daniel von Bargen was outstanding. In this exceedingly creepy film, the story begins with the murder of a cult leader in the Mojave desert. The members scatter, the founder is buried, and the survivors try to live a normal life. Unfortunately, one of the former cult members just won't let the dead rest. As the planned resurrection moves forward, things heat up and a deadly confrontation is imminent. This favorite gets a 5 out of 5.

Collection ID 490
Director: Peter Jackson
Starring: Noel Appleby, Sean Astin, Sala Baker, Sean Bean, Cate Blanchett
Genre: Fantasy
Studio: New Line Cinema   Release date: 2001   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): German, English, English (New Zealand)
Summary: In a small village in the Shire a young Hobbit named Frodo has been entrusted with an ancient Ring. Now he must embark on an Epic quest to the Cracks of Doom in order to destroy it.
My Rating:
My Review: The debut of a new type of fantasy movie. This movie is a hallmark production in the fantasy genre. Tolkien and other authors have defined a genre which the movies have tried in vain to reflect. Until the release of this movie, those reflections were pale, palid, and distorted. Like eating fat free icecream on a hot summer night. This movie got it right, everything felt real. Outstanding cast, dramatic performances, dmagnificent direction, spectacular effects, fantastic costumes, make-up, sets, locations - my god, the locations!, music that charged the soul and a story like something out of the bible. The fantasy genre has a new high water mark. This film will set a standard that others can only dream of reaching. This movie does for the fantasy genre what blade runner did for the sci-fi genre. I give it a 5 out of 5. I bought a copy as soon as it came out.

Studio: New Line Cinema   Release date: 2003   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English (USA)
Summary: The former Fellowship of the Ring prepare for the final battle for Middle Earth, while Frodo & Sam approach Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring.
My Rating:
My Review: The final movie in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. An epic unlike any other. This trilogy has set a standard likely to last a hundred years. Grand in scale, cinematic, moving, and breathtaking. The telling of Tolkein's tale is unlike any other movie. This final chapter caps the series with a brilliant gem. The only problem with this movie was the incredibly long ending, the multiple endings that seem to never end. At 3 hrs and 20 minutes, it's hard to believe that there's an 'extended version' available. The story is awesome, the characters, acting an music were truly exceptional. Won eleven oscars!

Genre: Fantasy
Studio: New Line Cinema   Release date: 2002   Rated: PG-13
Language (Country): English (USA)
Summary: Frodo and Sam continue on to Mordor in their mission to destroy the One Ring. Whilst their former companions make new allies and launch an assault on Isengard.
My Rating:
My Review: The end of the trilogy. Everything has a beginning and an end. This movie was about death and endings. Excellent acting. Hugo Weaving steals the show as Agent Smith. Once again the movie feels rushed. The 2nd and 3rd movies feel rushed when compared to the first movie. This movie feels much more like the 2nd movie than the first. The action was spectacular, but it was too much. Too much action, too much dialog. I liked the dialog. It explained a lot about the relationships between man and the machine. The Oracle, the Architect, the Frenchman, the Trainmaster, etc. The only flaw in this movie; the pacing. Excellent all around.
